GUILHERME PONTES
Originally from Rio de Janeiro, he is an artist, designer, and co-founder of Associação Trama Riscada – Estúdio de Artes Impressas, where he develops and promotes the practice of graphic and print arts, providing technical support to resident artists and overseeing digital outreach.
His trajectory is marked by a deliberate transition from engineering to the field of visual arts. He initially enrolled in Civil Engineering at PUC-Rio; however, after his first encounter with photography, he chose to redirect his focus to Graphic Design, driven by a desire to reconcile artistic expression with professional practice. This path led him to San Francisco, USA, where he earned his degree from the Academy of Art University, and later to Melbourne, Australia, where he completed a Master’s in Communication Design at Swinburne University of Technology.
As a designer, he worked at some of the most respected studios in Australia and Brazil, such as Cornwell Design and Agência Ana Couto. After years working in the field of corporate identity design, he chose to transition from commercial design to an independent artistic practice. This shift was also driven by the need to explore his artistic work in relation to philosophical inquiry, developing works with a reflective dimension, engaging with the notion of the intransitive image, and pursuing a theory of art grounded in the artist’s own aesthetic perspective. Today, his practice focuses on the exploration and investigation of printmaking, integrating the various techniques he works with, with a primary focus on screen printing. As an artist, he has participated in group exhibitions in New York, London, and Lisbon.
In September 2018, he decided to live and work in Lisbon, where he gained experience as a businessman and entrepreneur, becoming a partner at Alvoradacitadina, Lda, until 2023. Nevertheless, the main reason for this decision lay in his desire to further develop his artistic practice through collaborative projects with other artists.
